Surgery and the Management of Esophageal Cancer

Update on the Role of Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy
October 6 -7, 2011
Hands-on Training October 5, 2011

This postgraduate course highlights the indications, outcomes and technical aspects of esophagectomy, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques, in the management of esophageal cancer as well as the role for multimodal therapy, advances in staging techniques and endoscopic therapies for early stage esophageal cancer. The program will consist of a series of lectures as well as live case demonstrations.

Agenda:
Two-Day Program (October 6-7)
The first day will include didactics from UPMC faculty as well as renowned guest speakers from accredited institutions. On the second day, participants will have the opportunity to watch, via teleconference, live surgery for the treatment of esophageal cancer (e.g., minimally invasive esophagectomy, radiofrequency ablation and endoscopic mucosal resection).

Hands-on Training Program (October 5)
In addition, as an adjunct to the didactic course, we are offering an optional, half-day, Hands-on Training in Advanced Endoscopic Techniques for Esophageal Cancer on the Wednesday before the two-day program.

Who Should Attend
This course is designed for general and thoracic surgeons, gastroenterologists, minimally invasive team members (MD, RN, PA, NP), allied health care professionals and interested medical and radiation oncology specialists.

The event will cover a full spectrum of topics, including:

  • surgery
  • induction therapy
  • targeted chemotherapy
  • endoscopic therapy and clinical and molecular risk stratification
  • importance of lymph node dissection

Two-day Program (October 6-7)
The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 14.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Other health care professionals are awarded 1.4 continuing education units (CEU’s) which are equal to 14.0 contact hours.
