Challenging the Paradigms: Liver Transplantation for Metabolic Diseases

Join specialists from Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and distinguished faculty from around the world for a two-day conference to explore the treatment of metabolic disease, including the potential use of liver or hepatocyte transplantation as a therapeutic modality.

The specific metabolic diseases to be addressed include the following:

  • Maple Syrup Urine Disease
  • Urea Cycle Defects
  • Propionic and Methylmalonic Acidemia
  • Mitochondrial Diseases
  • Glycogen Storage Diseases
  • Phenylketonuria

The first day of the conference is dedicated to scientific sessions for the health care professional. A panel of experts will discuss various metabolic diseases in the context of liver transplantation as a therapeutic option. As the outcomes of liver transplant have improved and our knowledge of metabolic disease grows, the range of disorders suitable for this approach continues to evolve.

Family Participation Day, focuses on providing information for families whose children may have metabolic disease, including a presentation of the risks of metabolic disease, quality of life concerns, and what families need to know when assessing the risks and benefits of liver transplantation in the treatment of their child’s metabolic disease.

This conference is designed for hepatologists, geneticists, gastroenterologists, transplant surgeons and nurses, physicians, residents, and other medical professionals interested in the management of metabolic disease for pediatric patients as well as families of children with metabolic disease.
